Archives For Prayer Request

We are going to Nicaragua this summer for a mission trip and we are in full fundraising mode. I spoke at a church yesterday and they paid me (like most churches) for my preaching. I immediately put the money in for our Nicaragua trip and was thankful God blessed me with an opportunity to speak and to contribute to the overall trip. By the grace of God Heather and I are half way there with plenty of time left to raise the remaining.

So what does that have to do with you? I set a goal for the mission team to raise $10k by the time we leave and so far we have raised $2765 (See our fundraising page here). That means we are a quarter of the way there. I want to help raise the money for the mission trip by offering my services to other churches. I would like to speak for your youth group retreat, lectureship, weekend seminar, church service when the preacher is absent, family retreat, Wednesday night class, high-school reunion, leadership retreat or whatever. The effort is to raise money for the trip but also to provide you with a service that could be catered to whatever type of need you might have. My areas of interests include (but are not limited to):

  • Youth Ministry (This is really where my heart is): Design, Culture, Training, Organizing, Conflict, Systems Theory, etc.
  • Youth Culture: Having a Biblical Worldview, Adolescent Issues, Family Dynamics, Social Media, Teenagers in Pain (Suicide, Depression, Cutting, Sex Addictions, Porn Addictions, etc.)
  • Theological Topics: Trinity, What does the bible mean for me today?, Church and Kingdom, Sin, Idolatry, Salvation, Mission of God and His People (i.e., Evangelism).
  • Apologetics
  • Textual Studies

Anything you can pick I can try to speak on. In no way does that make me an expert and I will be blunt if I cannot speak on certain things. If nobody wants to take this offer then that is perfectly fine. I am OK with that. I just wanted to throw this out there as an option. Below is an example of a lesson I did with #Hashtag this past summer. It was a neat project but you can see my style of speaking. I have spoken for numerous churches, Heritage Christian University Youth Ministry Lectures, Freed-Hardeman University Lectureship (Youth and Main Sessions), Revival Youth Minister’s Retreat, Numerous Youth Rallies, Evangelism University, Southern Evangelism Conference and other venues. You can email me at “remackenzie11@hotmail.com” if you would like to throw some dates out. Keep in mind, I help you but also this helps 30+ go to Nicaragua. Let me know if I can help.

Also, don’t ask me to speak if you feel sorry for me. If you feel sorry then just donate some money to the cause and invite someone else to speak. I think I can help but want you to feel comfortable.

Father in heaven there is a lot going on in my life that needs cleansing and healing.  First of all, allow me to accept those things which are new and embrace them with open arms.  It is difficult to think about what lies ahead but I understand that there is no guarantee for any of us.  Health is a blessing and I am always one heart attack, stroke or accident away from meeting you and so I am blessed to be where I am at right now.  Protect my kids and give me the knowledge to train them in loving you not by word only but in a relationship that interacts with you.  Father please be with the college students and help them to grow closer to you but allow them to do so in a way that is genuine.  Many of them are meeting potential spouses or are looking for potential spouses and I ask that you give them the knowledge to choose wisely.  Father the youth group needs your help as Satan is excellent at what he does.  There is too much temptation out there and I am afraid much of our youth are succumbing to this so please help them with the power of your Son.  Father help Main Street to have new life in 2011 and allow us to grow spiritually but even numerically.  We do not need to settle for second best as too much is at stake for us to simply be content and ride off in the sunset.  Father help us in this year to be ready for the deaths, the injuries, the accidents, the sins, the mistakes, the broken relationships and the foolish decisions we inevitably will make.  Also, Father, through your Spirit, allow us/me to accept the new possibilities and fully embrace them regardless of the consequences.  Deliver us O Lord, according to your ceaseless love.  Amen.

Looking at the data it seems that most of the southeastern portion of the United States ranks high in obesity (see http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/trends.html).  Tennessee continues to rank high in obesity as 30% of all adults could be classified as obese.  “Obese” means those who have a BMI of 30 or above (http://win.niddk.nih.gov/publications/glossary.htm) but very muscular people can have a high BMI but have no adverse physical problems.  The United States is number one in the world in obesity with roughly 30% of the population being obese (http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/hea_obe-health-obesity) which is staggering because there are roughly 925 million people in the world who are undernourished (http://www.fao.org/docrep/012/al390e/al390e00.pdf).

So while people encourage me to eat two or three helpings and laugh there are people who go days without eating.  I preface you with those statistics because I am tired of doing things in excess.  Jesus said, “Give us today our daily bread” (Matt. 6:11) and that was all the disciples needed.  Not me.  I get hungry, I grab some potato chips.  I get thirsty, I grab a soda.  I get hungry again, I grab some cookies.  Instead of food being a necessary nutrient to keep me healthy I find that it is an addiction to keep me satisfied.  I can’t tell you the number of times I have tried diets, diet pills and working out all to lose weight.  I have not been under 200 lbs since Heather and I moved to Springfield (the lowest was 207).  I am not advocating I look like a man on the cover of GQ however I am tired of bending over to tie my shoes only to be out of breath by the time I am done.  I am tired of looking at pictures of when I was in high-school (173 lbs!!!) and then looking at pictures now and being disgusted.

I think I have narrowed the problem to a lack of drive in me.  I want a “magic pill” or a “magic diet” to solve all my issues so I don’t have to work hard at it.  I work hard at the office, hard at the house and the last thing I want to do is to work hard on my body.  Matter of fact, I eat a lot because I feel like I have at least earned the right to not work hard at eating.  The problem that gaining weight does on a person’s soul is that it causes them to look at their bodies in disgust which means they (namely, me) are not satisfied with the body God has given them.  So while this is part confession it is also part revelation.  I loathe the self-help books that treat God’s Word as if it is a book about creating a better me and a better you.  Look, God’s word is a book about how to have a relationship with him and how other people have done it.  Having said that, the Scriptures do offer me strength for my journey which is what I aim to do for 2011.  My focus for 2011 will be “Waste Not, Want Not.”  That applies to food, money, entertainment and other material things.  I plan on journaling more and wasting less time on food and other things and living a more simple life.  I am tired of doing things in excess and want to learn to be simpler in my approach to life.  Will you pray for me?  Because the formula to lose weight is simple: eat less, exercise more.  The formula for a better budget is simple: spend less, save more.  The formula for a better relationship with God is simple: self less, God more.

Dear Obama…

June 23, 2010 — 1 Comment

If I could have a conversation or if I could have one letter to the president this is what I would say.

Dear Mr. President,

My name is Robbie Mackenzie and I was originally born (1981) in Toronto, Canada but have lived in the U.S. since 1982.  My family and I have enjoyed what America has offered us and because of the economy and the way things are set up we have prospered far beyond the world’s median income.  We believe in America’s core values and support what she is trying to do in keeping people “free” and removed from terrorism and tyranny.  I believe this was what my great-grandfather Cecil Climo was trying to do when he fought for the Canadian Army in WWI serving as a gunner against Kaiser and the Germany infantry.  I believe this was also what my great-grandfather Mackenzie was doing when he served as a doctor for the Canadian Army.  But I wonder what we are doing now when we are “preserving our freedoms.”  What does it really mean to be free and does that imply that we submit to no authority at all?  Are we really free?  You must have a difficult job being Commander-in-Chief of an entire nation with everyone scrutinizing your every move and with a window of only four years (but a maximum of eight) to accomplish policies which you and your party believes as crucial to American democracy.  I think this to be a most difficult task and so my prayers are with you each and every day you are in office.  I hear talks about how the worst thing to happen to this country was to have you in office and I also hear talks that you swearing-in to accept office was the best moment in this nation’s history.  I find it impeccably ironic that one moment for this country is split down the middle as to it being either great or immensely dim.

I have a confession for you Mr. President.  I have been apathetic for the past three years I did not even vote when elections came.  I am not sure I can explain what is wrong with this country but somewhere along the lines we have lost our gusto and our wherewithal to be a people who is set apart for something spectacular or even noble.  We are consumed with republican/democracy, red/blue, rich/poor, north/south and on and on.  Our greatest achievements in wealth and power might be our greatest fall.  My request to you is not bi-partisanship, communism, social reform, economic stimulus or even a return to the United States Constitution.  What about Jesus?  Jesus is painted as broad as a prophet to a sinner, a savior to a psycho and all the while we are scared to consider his ways as a possibility for a nation who needs something.   Mr. President, is it so bad to think about man, woman, Jew, Gentile, black and white actually doing unto each as they want done unto them?  Mr. President, is it so bad to think about a people who, “so far as it depends on them to be at peace with all men”?  Mr. President, what is wrong with the idea og “going the extra mile” for folks or practicing the “Christian graces” found in 2 Peter 1:5-8?

Scary?  Of course!  What about the mis-interpretations and the all-out chaos that comes from people who take things out of context?  That is why we must surround ourselves with people who take Jesus and His word seriously.  Accountability.  Trust.  The ability to recognize a higher power without trying to do so in order to get constituents to vote for us.  Trust is the ability to look into our future and be scared but to realize that  I know the One who can help us and I trust Him!

Mr. President…these are my words and I beg you…no…I plead with you to listen as somewhere along the way we are missing our chance to be different from the world and to do the right thing.  Who cares about votes, policy, a strength in the Supreme Court or a balance of power?  What happened to doing the right thing for the sake of it being the right thing to do?  I believe in the United States but I trust in Jesus.  Shouldn’t we try?  Why have we stopped believing in things?  We have educated ourselves into a total reliance on sheer intellect and not someone (Someone) else.  We have raised up a generation of people who simply do not trust anymore and the only thrill in life is the next drink, the next hit from the joint or the next car we can buy.  Mr. President, shouldn’t we try?  Shouldn’t we try?  The choice is up to you and we need people who believe in things not to make it sound good in an oration or cabinent speech but we need people who hold true to the one thing that created everything.  God.  So we trust you to do the right thing and to believe in something for once.

Sincerely,

Robbie Mackenzie

I want to talk to you about a brave young girl in our youth group by the name of Amber Toothman.  When we first met she could barely look me in the eyes because she was so shy.  She would come to various activities and youth events but rarely would she say a word for she did not want to embarrass herself.  Now she talks to me all the time and she is more confident about who she is and it is amazing what God has done with her.  I had the honor of baptizing her into Christ and watching her come out of the water a new creation.  I am so amazed at the courage she has to endure so many trials and tribulations.

Tomorrow at 9am Amber has to go to the Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville and have a non-malignant tumor removed from her brain.  She has experienced seizures and the doctors believe this will help to solve the problem.  I am not sure about you but the words “brain surgery” scare the mess out of me.  There is not much we can do at this point but turn it over to the Master who knows everything about Amber and about all of us.  Tomorrow the doctors will perform the surgery for 4 hours but God already performed surgery on Amber’s heart and so everything will be fine.  I am so proud of Amber and the courage she has to go through with this.  She needs your prayers and she needs your strength.

James 5:16 is all we can count on right now.  Consider the New Living Translation of that verse: “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”  That is all we can do right now.  Pray.

So here I go….Father, God, infinite creator.  You have kept us going for a long time now and it is because of you that we even are alive.  I love you God and want you to know how much you have done for me.  I approach your throne now asking you to be with Amber Toothman…my friend and your child.  Give her the comfort to know that no matter what happens you will be with her.  She is such a beautiful person inside and out and I am compelled to go before you on her behalf.  I am not sure what I need to pray for as a lot of this relies on the doctors, the nurses and the staff.  I wish I could say that everything will work out but, God, I am just not sure.  I hate it.  I entrust this to you Lord and to be with Amber who is already so courageous.  God, you are so amazing.  Be with us all.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
